What is ClickFunnels, and how is it different from Shopify?
ClickFunnels is a funnel builder: a hosted platform for building step-by-step sales pages that lead a visitor to one offer at a time, with order bumps and upsells along the way. Its plans also include email marketing, online courses, membership sites, A/B testing, analytics and a checkout, so many businesses run their whole online sales process inside it.
Shopify is an ecommerce platform built around a product catalogue, inventory, a cart and Shopify checkout, with thousands of apps for reviews, subscriptions, bundles, shipping and more. A standard Shopify store is designed for browsing many products rather than following one guided path.
The difference in one sentence: ClickFunnels is built around the funnel, and Shopify is built around the store. The question is whether a Shopify store needs a second platform to get funnel-style selling, or whether the funnel can live inside Shopify.
How do ClickFunnels and Shopify work together?
ClickFunnels offers a Shopify integration aimed at physical products. According to ClickFunnels' own help documentation, the customer pays through the payment gateway set up in ClickFunnels, and the order details are then sent to Shopify so you can fulfil and ship from there. Products are matched between the two systems by SKU.
That works, but it has practical consequences for a Shopify brand:
- Two checkouts. Funnel buyers pay in ClickFunnels' checkout, while everyone else pays in Shopify checkout. Shopify-specific payment features, such as Shop Pay, apply to the Shopify side.
- Two sets of products and prices. Products, prices and offers have to be set up in ClickFunnels and mapped to Shopify, and kept in step when anything changes.
- Split reporting. Revenue and customer data start in two places, so comparing funnel buyers with store buyers takes extra work.
- Two monthly bills. You keep paying for Shopify and add a ClickFunnels plan on top.
Before you commit, check exactly how inventory, discount codes, customer records and refunds would be handled across both systems for your store.
How do they compare side by side?
This table compares running a funnel on ClickFunnels alongside Shopify with building the funnel natively in Shopify. ClickFunnels details are from its website at the time of writing and may change.
| ClickFunnels alongside Shopify | Funnel built natively in Shopify | |
|---|---|---|
| Extra platform fee | US$97 to US$297 a month at the time of writing, less with annual billing | None for the platform. Apps or a build may cost extra. |
| Checkout | ClickFunnels checkout for funnel buyers | Your normal Shopify checkout |
| Customer record | Starts in ClickFunnels, order passed to Shopify | One record in Shopify |
| Products and inventory | Mapped to Shopify by SKU | Uses your live Shopify products and stock |
| Shopify apps and reviews | Not on funnel pages unless rebuilt there | Available, because the funnel is in your store |
| Domain | Funnel on a domain or subdomain connected to ClickFunnels | Your store domain |
| Built-in email, courses, memberships | Yes, included in plans | Via Shopify apps and email tools such as Klaviyo |
| A/B testing | Built in | Via a testing app or a built-in test set-up |
| Best fit | Courses, coaching, lead generation, info products | Physical-product Shopify stores |
Where is ClickFunnels strong?
It's worth being fair here. ClickFunnels is a mature product and there are good reasons people use it.
- Digital products and courses. Course hosting and membership areas are built in, so you don't need a separate learning platform.
- Lead generation. Opt-in pages, webinar registrations and email follow-ups can all run in one system.
- All-in-one simplicity. Pages, checkout, email and contacts live together, which suits businesses without an existing store.
- Funnel templates and upsells. It's designed around step-by-step offers, order bumps and one-click upsells.
- Built-in split testing. You can test page variations inside the platform.
- Try before you buy. At the time of writing it offers a 14-day free trial.
If you sell a course, a coaching programme or a digital download and you don't run a Shopify store, ClickFunnels may cover almost everything you need in one subscription.
What are the benefits of a native Shopify funnel?
For a brand already selling physical products on Shopify, building the funnel inside the store avoids most of the split described above.
- One checkout. Every order goes through Shopify checkout, with the payment options your customers already use.
- One customer record. Funnel buyers and store buyers sit in the same Shopify customer list, so your email flows, segments and reports stay whole.
- Live products and stock. The funnel uses your real Shopify products, prices and inventory, so nothing needs mapping or syncing.
- Your apps still work. Reviews, subscriptions, loyalty and shipping apps can keep doing their job.
- No extra platform fee. You aren't adding a second monthly subscription just to host pages.
- One domain. Shoppers stay on your store from first click to order confirmation.
The trade-off is that Shopify doesn't come with a funnel builder out of the box. You either build the funnel with your theme and apps, use a page-builder app, or have it built for you. Our guide to how much a Shopify sales funnel costs compares those routes, and landing page vs product page explains when a dedicated page is worth it.
Which should you choose?
ClickFunnels is likely the better fit if
- You mainly sell courses, coaching, memberships or digital products.
- You don't have a Shopify store, or Shopify is a small part of your business.
- You want pages, checkout, email and courses in one subscription.
A native Shopify funnel is likely the better fit if
- You sell physical products and already run your store on Shopify.
- You rely on Shopify apps, reviews, inventory and Shopify checkout.
- You want one set of customer data feeding your email, such as abandoned cart recovery.
- You'd rather not pay for and maintain a second platform.
Whichever you choose, test it
The platform matters less than the offer and the path. A funnel should be judged by revenue per visitor, which combines conversion rate and average order value. Run it as an A/B test against your current page, with enough traffic and time for the result to mean something. Our Shopify A/B testing guide explains how, and the conversion rate benchmarks guide shows how to set a baseline first. If you're still diagnosing the problem, start with why Shopify visitors don't buy.
Where does Tap Vortex fit?
Tap Vortex is a done-for-you sales funnel, called a "vortex", built natively inside your Shopify store. It's for Shopify brands that want funnel-style selling without adding a separate funnel platform. The vortex gives shoppers one guided path: the live offer, quick taps to choose, a bundle ladder that grows the order (see increasing average order value), honest urgency tied to your real sale, and a held bag that hands off to your normal Shopify checkout.
It's built on your existing theme, with your products, cart and checkout untouched, and set up as an A/B test against your current page so revenue per visitor decides. A Tap Vortex build is $695 + GST, one-off, with no lock-in and no monthly platform fee, live in three weeks. Optional add-ons include Klaviyo flows, a second offer, a rush build and a monthly Growth plan for ongoing split tests; see pricing and inclusions or how a Tap Vortex funnel works. Like any approach, it can't promise a particular result. To estimate what a small lift could be worth for your store, try the revenue leak calculator.
FAQ
Do I need ClickFunnels if I already use Shopify?
Usually not, if you sell physical products. You can build a funnel natively inside Shopify, which keeps Shopify checkout, one customer record, your apps and your live inventory. ClickFunnels makes more sense if you mainly sell courses, coaching, memberships or digital products.
How much does ClickFunnels cost?
At the time of writing (October 2026), ClickFunnels lists monthly plans of US$97 (Launch), US$197 (Scale) and US$297 (Optimize), with lower monthly prices on annual billing and a higher annual-only tier. Prices are in US dollars and change from time to time, so check the ClickFunnels pricing page. For a Shopify store, this is on top of your Shopify plan.
Does ClickFunnels integrate with Shopify?
Yes. ClickFunnels offers a Shopify integration for physical products. According to its help documentation, the customer pays in ClickFunnels, and the order details are sent to Shopify for fulfilment, with products matched by SKU. That means your funnel and your store use separate checkouts.
Can I build a sales funnel inside Shopify?
Yes. You can build a funnel-style sale page with your theme's sections, a page-builder app, or a done-for-you native build. Because it lives in your store, it uses your real products, cart and Shopify checkout.
Is ClickFunnels or Shopify better for ecommerce?
They are built for different jobs. Shopify is built around a product catalogue, inventory and checkout, with a large app ecosystem. ClickFunnels is built around step-by-step funnels with email, courses and memberships included. Many physical-product brands keep Shopify as the store and add funnel-style pages inside it.
How do I know if a new funnel is working?
Run it as an A/B test against your current page and judge it by revenue per visitor, which combines conversion rate and average order value. Give the test enough traffic and time to produce a reliable answer before you decide.
