What Shopify CRO actually is
Shopify CRO (conversion rate optimisation) is the work of getting more revenue out of the visitors you already have. Not more traffic. More money from the traffic you're already paying for.
Most people stop at conversion rate: the share of visitors who buy. That's half the picture. The number that actually pays the bills is revenue per visitor:
Revenue per visitor = conversion rate × average order value.
Lift either side and revenue per visitor goes up. Lift both and it compounds. Discounts can't fake it: a 30% off banner might push conversion rate up while quietly gutting order value.
So good CRO for Shopify stores works both levers at once. Get more people to buy, and get each buyer to put more in the bag. If you want to go deep on the second lever, read our guide to increasing average order value on Shopify.
Why typical scroll stores leak
Most Shopify sale pages leak because they hand the shopper a grid and say "good luck". Lots of choice, no direction, no reason to act now and no reason to add one more thing.
Most stores convert a small single-digit percentage of visitors, so the large majority leave without buying. On a typical sale page, that usually comes down to a few familiar leaks:
- Too many choices, no path. A wall of products makes the shopper do all the work. Plenty don't.
- No real urgency. The sale has an end date, but the page doesn't show it, so "later" wins.
- Flat discounts. 20% off everything gives away margin on the first item and offers no reason to buy a second.
- No momentum. Nothing rewards the shopper for going one step further, so baskets stay small.
- No memory. The visitor leaves and you learn nothing about what they wanted.
Fixing button colours won't close those gaps. The page itself needs a different shape.
The Tap Vortex approach: five stages
We replace the scroll-a-grid sale page with a guided "vortex" page: one guided path, always one next step. Each stage pulls the shopper a little further in and builds the order as they go. You can click through a working example on our interactive overview.
1. Pull
Grab attention with what's actually happening right now: the live offer, a real countdown, a ticker strip and a progress bar. The shopper knows the deal and how long it lasts within seconds.
2. Spin
One guided path, with an instant reward at each step. Where it genuinely lifts the bundle, we add an optional quiz. Where it doesn't, we leave it out. Our Shopify product quiz guide covers when a quiz earns its place.
3. Spiral
Show a filtered range, "your match" and why it fits, using the shopper's own answers. Less browsing, more buying.
4. Surge
This is where order value grows. A tier ladder, a free-shipping tier and one-tap add let momentum build the bundle. Instead of a flat 20% off, the discount grows with the order. Typical order engine ideas include:
- Bundle ladder, answer-built bundle, complete-the-fit and build-a-stack
- Stacked savings and earn-as-you-tap rewards
- Next-tier nudges like "$12 away from free shipping"
- Per-unit price drops as quantity goes up
For the full playbook, see Shopify bundles and upsells.
5. Eye
Close the deal cleanly. Itemised savings show exactly what the shopper is getting, the bag is held on a timer, and we hand off to Shopify checkout as normal.
Real urgency only. The countdown is tied to your real sale end. The bag is genuinely held for 15 minutes. "Low stock in your size" only shows when it's true. No fake timers, ever.
Every tap builds a customer profile
As shoppers move through the vortex, their taps build zero-party data: size, flavour, occasion and whatever else matters to your range. That profile feeds your email and SMS, paid-ad audiences, stock planning and product decisions. Our guide to Klaviyo flows for Shopify shows how to put those answers to work.
What's included and pricing
A Tap Vortex build is $695 + GST, one-off, with no lock-in. That covers the audit, the build and the A/B test set-up. Add-ons are optional.
| Option | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Tap Vortex build | $695 + GST, one-off | Audit of your current page. Built inside your Shopify store on your theme. Products, cart and checkout untouched. A/B test set up against your current page. Live in three weeks. |
| Klaviyo flows | +$1,500 | Every answer turned into email and SMS that sells. |
| Second offer | +$495 | A second vortex for another product or sale. |
| Rush build | +$295 | Live in 7 days. |
| Growth plan | $295/mo | We run the split tests and ship a new lift every month. |
No retainers you didn't ask for. If you want ongoing testing, the Growth plan is there. If not, the build is yours.
The three-week process
From kick-off to live split test takes three weeks (or seven days with a rush build). Here's how it runs.
- Week 1: Audit. We map your page, offer and traffic, and find where it leaks.
- Week 2: Build. You add us as a Shopify collaborator. We build the vortex inside your store, on your theme.
- Week 3: Split test. The new page is imported as an A/B test. Half your traffic goes each way, and revenue per visitor decides.
- Ongoing: Grow. The winner gets 100% of traffic. Then we test the next lift.
You stay in control the whole way. It's your store, your theme and your checkout. We just change the page that does the selling.
How results are proven
Results are proven with an A/B split test: half your traffic sees your current page, half sees the vortex, and revenue per visitor picks the winner. Don't trust us. Test us.
We use revenue per visitor rather than conversion rate alone because it's the one number discounts can't fake. A page that converts more people at a lower order value might look like a win and still make you less money. Revenue per visitor catches that.
No promises of a specific lift, no cherry-picked screenshots. The test runs on your real traffic and the numbers speak for themselves. If you want to understand how a fair test works before we start, read our Shopify A/B testing guide.
Who it's for (and who it isn't)
Tap Vortex suits Shopify brands that already have traffic and an offer, and want more revenue from every visitor. It works with any Shopify store, any offer (discounts, bundles, gifts or full price) and any industry.
A good fit if you:
- Run a Shopify store and have a sale, launch or hero product you want to push harder
- Want to increase your Shopify conversion rate and grow order value at the same time
- Would rather prove a change with a test than argue about it in a meeting
- Want to learn what your customers actually want, not just what they bought
Probably not for you if you:
- Aren't on Shopify
- Want a full store redesign or a new theme from scratch
- Want fake scarcity, fake timers or pressure tactics
- Aren't willing to let a split test decide what stays

FAQ
How much does a Shopify CRO agency cost?
A Tap Vortex build is $695 + GST, one-off, with no lock-in. It includes an audit of your current page, the build inside your Shopify store and an A/B test against your current page. Optional add-ons are Klaviyo flows (+$1,500), a second offer (+$495), a rush build (+$295) and the Growth plan ($295/mo).
How long does it take?
Three weeks from kick-off to a live split test: week 1 audit, week 2 build, week 3 split test. With the rush build add-on, it can be live in 7 days.
Will it break my theme or checkout?
No. The vortex is built inside your Shopify store on your existing theme. Your products, cart and checkout stay untouched, and the page hands off to the normal Shopify checkout.
Do I need lots of traffic for an A/B test?
More traffic gives you a clearer answer, faster. With less traffic the test simply needs longer to run before revenue per visitor shows a reliable winner. We look at your traffic in the week 1 audit and set expectations before anything goes live.
Do you work with stores outside Perth?
Yes. We work with Shopify stores across all of Australia, fully remote. You add us as a Shopify collaborator and we handle the rest online, starting with a 15-minute call.
What if the test loses?
Then your current page keeps 100% of the traffic and you have a clear answer instead of a guess. That's the point of testing: revenue per visitor decides, not opinion. From there we can look at what the data shows and test the next lift.
