Why beauty and skincare stores leak
Beauty stores leak because the shopper has to work out their own routine from a grid of products that look alike. When the choice feels risky, the easy answer is one familiar product, or nothing at all.
The leaks we see most on beauty and skincare sale pages:
- Product confusion. Three serums and two moisturisers with similar packshots, and no way to tell them apart.
- "Which one is for my skin?" The question every skincare shopper has, and most pages never answer.
- Single-product buys. A shopper who came for one serum leaves with one serum. Nothing on the page shows how it fits a routine.
- No routine. Skincare is used in steps, but most stores sell it item by item.
- Discount dependence. A sitewide 20% off trains shoppers to wait for the next sale and gives away margin on the first item without giving a reason to add a second.
None of these is a button-colour problem. The page needs a different shape, which is what our Shopify CRO agency service builds. Want a rough number first? Work out what your store is leaking.
How a guided vortex fits beauty
A guided vortex fits beauty because it replaces browsing with a short conversation that ends in a routine. One path, always one next step, and the order grows as the shopper goes.
Skin type and concern questions, only where they lift the bundle
A skincare quiz on Shopify is useful when the answer changes what the shopper sees. If every answer leads to the same three products, the question is friction, and we leave it out. Our Shopify product quiz guide covers when a quiz earns its place.
"Your routine", with why it fits
Instead of a filtered grid, the shopper sees a recommended routine built from their answers, with a short line on why each product is there: "You said your skin feels tight by midday, so we've matched the richer moisturiser." The reason comes from what they told you, using your approved product copy, not a promise about results.
A build-a-routine bundle ladder
The routine is laid out as steps: cleanse, treat, protect. Each step is a one-tap add, and a progress bar shows how close the shopper is to a complete routine. This is where a skincare routine bundle beats a flat discount: the shopper builds the bundle themselves, so it feels like their routine, not your upsell. For more formats, see Shopify bundles and upsells.
A discount that grows with the routine
Rather than 20% off everything, the saving climbs with each step added. Two steps might unlock 10%, three steps 15%, a full routine 20%. It's one of the simplest ways to increase AOV in beauty, and our guide to increasing average order value on Shopify goes deeper.
Gift with purchase at a tier
Beauty shoppers expect a gift with purchase. Tying it to a tier ("add one more step to get the travel-size cleanser") turns a giveaway into a nudge.
Replenishment timing into Klaviyo flows
Skincare runs out on a rough schedule. When the vortex knows what's in the routine, your email can reach out near the time a product is likely to run low, or offer a skincare subscription for the steps they use daily. Our guide to Klaviyo flows for Shopify shows how to set it up.
Real urgency only. The countdown is tied to your real sale end. The bag is genuinely held for 15 minutes. "Low stock" only shows when it's true. No fake timers, ever.
Keeping claims compliant
The vortex explains why a product fits a shopper's answers. It does not claim what a product will do to their skin. That line matters more in beauty than almost anywhere else.
Cosmetic vs therapeutic claims. In Australia, a product's claims can change how it's regulated. Primary sunscreens and products claiming to treat or prevent a condition (such as acne) are generally regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) as therapeutic goods, not cosmetics. All claims, cosmetic or not, must also avoid being misleading under the Australian Consumer Law.
We build the page around your existing, approved product copy and keep recommendation text to "why it matches your answers". Checking what your products can claim stays with you. This is general information, not legal advice. If you're unsure, speak to a regulatory adviser.
Zero-party data for skincare brands
Every tap in the vortex tells you something your order data can't: skin type, main concerns and what's already in the shopper's routine. That's zero-party data, given willingly.
- Segmented email and SMS. Send dry-skin content to dry-skin shoppers, not a one-size newsletter.
- Routine gaps. Someone who bought cleanse and treat but skipped protect is an obvious next email.
- Product development. If many shoppers name a concern your range doesn't cover, that's a brief for your next launch.
The five stages on a skincare store
Here's how the five stages could work for a hypothetical skincare brand with four products: a cleanser ($36), a serum ($58), a moisturiser ($48) and an SPF ($40), all AUD. It's an illustration, not a client.
1. Pull
The page opens on the live offer: "Build your routine. Save up to 20% until Sunday midnight." A real countdown and a progress bar set the deal in seconds.
2. Spin
Two quick questions: skin type and main concern. Each answer unlocks the next step.
3. Spiral
"Your routine" appears with the products matched to those answers and a one-line reason for each.
4. Surge
The routine ladder does the work. The serum alone is $58. Add the cleanser for 10% off both, the moisturiser for 15% off all three, and the SPF for 20% off the full routine plus a travel-size gift. The full routine comes to $145.60 instead of $182, and a "$12 away from free shipping" style nudge appears when it helps.
5. Eye
Itemised savings, a bag held for 15 minutes, and a normal Shopify checkout.

The three-week process
From kick-off to a live split test takes three weeks, or seven days with a rush build.
- Week 1: Audit. We map your page, range, offer and traffic, find where it leaks, and decide which skin questions earn a place.
- Week 2: Build. You add us as a Shopify collaborator. We build the vortex inside your store, on your theme, using your approved copy.
- Week 3: Split test. Half your traffic sees each page, and revenue per visitor decides.
- Ongoing: Grow. The winner gets 100% of traffic. Then we test the next lift.
Don't trust us. Test us. No promises of a specific lift, just a fair test on your real traffic.
FAQ
Do I need a skincare quiz on my Shopify store?
Not always. A skin type or concern question earns its place when it changes which routine the shopper sees and lifts the bundle. If every answer leads to the same products, we leave it out. We decide in the week 1 audit, based on your range.
Will the page make claims about what my products do?
No. The vortex uses your approved product copy and explains why a product fits the shopper's answers, not what it will do for their skin. Claims stay your responsibility, so check them with a regulatory adviser if you're unsure.
Can it work alongside my skincare subscription app?
Yes. The vortex is built inside your Shopify store on your existing theme, and checkout stays untouched. Routine and replenishment answers can feed your Klaviyo flows, with the Klaviyo flows add-on at +$1,500 if you want us to build them.
How much does Shopify CRO for a beauty brand cost?
The same as any Tap Vortex build: $695 + GST, one-off, with no lock-in. That covers the audit, the build inside your store and an A/B test against your current page. Add-ons are optional.
How do I know if it worked?
With an A/B split test. Half your traffic sees your current page, half sees the vortex, and revenue per visitor picks the winner. If your current page wins, it keeps 100% of the traffic.
